The Beginning of Jeeps

In the 1940s, when World War II was starting, the American army used the cars as military vehicles, but they were not called Jeeps then. The very first vehicle that was known as Jeep was produced on 13 June 1950 when Willys-Overland trademarked the name.

Three years later, Henry J. Kaiser bought the Jeep company from Willys-Overland. He rebranded the company to Willys Motors, Inc. Ten years after that (1963), the company changed names again and become Kaiser Jeep Corporation. Sadly, within seven years, the firm was sold once again. This time American Motors Corporation bought it for about USD75 million. From 1970 to 1987, Jeep remained with American Motors Corporation.

The Recent History Of Jeep Company

In 1987, two changes occurred. One, the CJ series replaces the 1st-gen Wranglers. Two, Chrysler bought a massive share in Blue jeep grand cherokee - Buy SUV in ChennaiAmerican Motors Corporation. In those shares, the by-then iconic Jeep brand was also included.

With the turn of the millennia, Chrysler started to lose business. By the time 2009 rolled in, Chrysler had declared bankruptcy under Chapter Eleven. Fiat came to save the day. In five short years, Fiat bought all the assets of Chrysler which comprised of Jeep. Fiat then merged the two automakers to make the brand – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

In other words, to be a jeep dealer in Chennai, we had to partner with FCA, i.e., Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

The Current Owner Of Jeep

FCA is one of the biggest automobile manufacturers in the world. It is an Italian American company. The Jeep brand comes within the purview of its American subsidiary, the FCA US LLC. Back in 2017, alleged news broke out that FCA was thinking of selling their Jeep subdivision to an automaker in China. In 2018, those rumours were laid to rest by the company.

Where Are The Cars Of A Jeep dealer in Chennai Made?

Most Jeeps are manufactured in America, but the FCA US LLC has manufacturing plants in some other countries too. Fiat Chrysler, the parent company of Jeep, has more than 150 manufacturing facilities around the world and some of them produce Jeeps for international customers. In India, Jeep is produced by FCA India Automobiles. The first few units of Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherokee were brought to India completely built. The company then invested around “$280 million in 2015 to begin Jeep production in India through the manufacturing joint venture with Tata Motors.”

Traditionally, Jeep Wranglers are made in a plant in Toledo, Ohio. Known as the Toledo Assembly Complex, it employs almost six thousand workers and covers more than 300 acres. Originally, the Toledo complex used to be a Stickney Plant. It was converted into a car manufacturing unit in 1981 by the American Motors Corporation. When Chrysler bought AMC in 1987, it started using

The Toledo Assembly Complex underwent a transformation in 2018. It was retooled to start creating JL Wranglers and Jeep Gladiator pickup trucks. An estimated amount of USD700 Million and USD1 Billion was invested for the retooling.

When it comes to the production of Jeep in India, the only car entirely made here is the Jeep Compass. So, when you walk into any showroom of a Jeep dealer in Chennai, the sole vehicle wholly made in the country is Jeep Compass. That said, as Jeep dealers, we emphasise only on one thing.
